Established on 15 May 1963 and headquartered in Ahmedabad, GMDC is India’s leading merchant seller of lignite and the second-largest lignite producer, with a diversified portfolio spanning mining, mineral processing, and power.
As a Government of Gujarat public-sector undertaking, GMDC’s work is not extraction for its own sake. The Corporation develops the State’s mineral wealth so that industry receives reliable feedstock, communities around project areas share in progress, and Gujarat’s energy needs are supported through thermal and renewable generation.
In simple terms: GMDC = Resources → Mining → Value Addition → Energy → Development.
Four connected priorities guide every project: secure minerals, add industrial value, generate power, and return development to people and land.
Explore and mine lignite and industrial minerals — bauxite, fluorspar, manganese, silica sand, limestone, bentonite, and ball clay — with scientific methods, safety, and long-term resource planning.
Move minerals from pit to plant to industry. Beneficiation and orderly logistics turn raw resources into usable inputs for textiles, chemicals, ceramics, cement, and power utilities.
Convert resource strength into energy through the Akrimota Thermal Power Station in Kutch, together with a growing wind and solar portfolio that supports a cleaner generation mix.
Pair commercial performance with public purpose: environmental care, community outreach, and research through institutions such as iCEM, GSRC, GMRICS, GMDCGVT, and Krantiteerth.
GMDC exists to put Gujarat’s mineral endowment to productive use — supplying industry, strengthening energy security, and remaining accountable as a listed Government company. Decisions at Board and project level are expected to balance output with safety, transparency, and the interests of host communities.
That is why the agenda is written as a chain, not a single mine: resources are explored, mined with discipline, processed for industry, converted into power where needed, and returned as development. The Corporation’s role is to keep that chain intact for the decades ahead.
